About
Prof. Meltem Serin, MD is a radiation oncologist at Acibadem Adana Hospital in Adana, where she works in the Radiation Oncology unit. She graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1989 and completed her specialty training in radiation oncology at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1994. Her clinical work covers head and neck cancers, brain tumors, breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancers, with radiotherapy and brachytherapy as her principal treatment modalities.
Her academic career began at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology, where she worked from 1994 to 2001 and then as Associate Professor from 2001 to 2003. In 2004 she moved to İnönü University Faculty of Medicine, where she served as Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology from 2004 to 2009 and was appointed Professor in 2007. During the same period she held institutional roles including Vice Dean (2004–2006), Vice Chair of the Department of Internal Medical Sciences, Chair of the Ethics Committee and Head of the Experimental Research Unit. In 2009 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. Her published work includes experimental studies on the effects of irradiation and on potential protective agents in animal models, case reports in head and neck oncology, and a multicenter study on patterns of care for lung cancer in radiation oncology departments in Turkey. She is a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, the European Society for Hyperthermic Oncology, the International Clinical Hyperthermia Society, the Radyasyon Onkolojisi Association and the Turkish Medical Association.
Clinical focus
Dr. Serin evaluates and treats adults with cancers that may be managed with radiation therapy. Her areas of expertise include head and neck cancers, brain tumors, breast cancer and gastrointestinal oncology. In each case, the role of radiotherapy is considered in the context of the tumor type, its stage and any surgery or systemic treatment the patient has received or is planned to receive.
Alongside external beam radiotherapy, she has experience with brachytherapy, in which a radiation source is placed inside or close to the tumor. Whether radiotherapy, brachytherapy or a combination is appropriate depends on the individual clinical situation, and treatment decisions are generally made together with the other specialists involved in the patient’s cancer care.
How Dr. Serin works with international patients
Dr. Serin consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before traveling.
