What a clinical trial is, and what it is not
A clinical trial is how a new treatment earns its place in standard care. Most of the drugs used today in oncology were tested in trials like the ones listed here.
A small group receives the treatment first. The team finds the right dose and watches for side effects.
A larger group with one cancer type. Researchers measure tumour response and keep monitoring safety.
Hundreds to thousands of patients in many countries, compared with the current standard. Most Acıbadem studies are Phase 3.
Long-term benefits and rare side effects are tracked in everyday care.
In cancer trials a placebo is only ever added on top of the best available standard treatment, and you are told in advance.
Trial patients are seen more often, with more scans and blood tests, by a dedicated study nurse and physician.
Eligibility depends on diagnosis and health, not nationality. Coordinators help with visa, stay and translated consent forms.
Questions about joining a study
The questions international patients ask most, answered by the coordination team.
01Will I get a placebo instead of treatment?
In cancer trials this practically never happens. Where a placebo is used, it is added on top of the best available standard treatment, and the consent form states this clearly.
02Does joining a trial cost money?
The study drug and all study-related tests and visits are covered by the sponsor. Standard treatment and travel costs are not, and the coordinator will explain the difference before you decide.
03Can I leave the study?
Yes, at any time, for any reason, without giving an explanation. You continue to receive standard care.
04Am I a “guinea pig”?
Every study on this site has passed an ethics committee and the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency, follows international Good Clinical Practice rules, and is monitored by the sponsor. Most listed studies are Phase 3, meaning the treatment has already shown safety and activity in earlier phases.
05Who decides if I am eligible?
The study physician, based on your diagnosis, stage, previous treatments, organ function and the study protocol. Criteria are strict for your protection; send your reports rather than deciding yourself.
06What if the treatment does not work for me?
You are monitored more closely than in routine care. If the disease progresses or side effects are unacceptable, you leave the study and the team discusses the next standard options with you.
07Are international patients accepted?
Eligibility depends on your health and diagnosis, not nationality. You must be able to attend all study visits at the Acıbadem site, which coordinators help you plan.
08How long does a study last?
It varies from months to years. Your participation is usually as long as the treatment benefits you, followed by scheduled follow-up visits.
09Is my data safe?
Study data is coded; your name is not shared with the sponsor. Data protection follows Turkish law and, for EU citizens, the GDPR.
10Can I join a study in another country later?
Usually yes, once you have completed or withdrawn from the current one, subject to that study's rules on prior treatment.
